Pharmaceutical Manufacturer Patient Assistance Programs
Safety Net Hospitals for Pharmaceutical Access (SNHPA) provides guidance to its members on how to utilize pharmaceutical manufacturer patient assistance programs (PAPs). These programs, offered by most major manufacturers, allow indigent patients to access free pharmaceuticals. Not only do these programs help needy patients, but the programs are also very important to safety net providers that are struggling to meet the rising demand for drugs by patients without insurance. However, there is often a significant administrative cost incurred by providers who assist patients in obtaining drugs through these programs. The eligibility criteria and enrollment process for a given drug varies between manufacturers, and it can also vary between product lines offered by the same company.
SNHPA is playing an important role in improving the operation of these programs for its members. In an effort to reduce the administrative costs in complying with these programs, SNHPA has published a comprehensive guidebook for members that identifies exemplary indigent drug programs and effective software to track patients using these programs. As a SNHPA member, you will receive this guidebook. SNHPA members are also able to share strategies on cost saving techniques through communication at Association conferences, as well as on SNHPA's mailing list in the Members Only section of this Web site. SNHPA also hosts conferences, workshops, and other forums to discuss strategies on how to maximize use of PAPs and ensure compliance with the law.
More recently, SNHPA has played an active role in encouraging pharmaceutical manufacturers to continue providing pharmaceutical assistance to low-income seniors and other vulnerable Medicare beneficiaries who may not be able to afford medications under the Medicare Part D program. SNHPA is working closely with pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, and patient advocacy groups to ensure that these programs remain viable. If you have any questions about PAPs, please contact Stuart Gordon at (202) 552-5851 or stuart.gordon@safetynetrx.org.
